With form in both singing and sports, Jasmine reveals how she’s juggling her final year at Law School with training for an Open Water ultramarathon, as well as bringing some cheeky attitude to Peep-Bo in Gilbert & Sullivan WA’s next mainstage production of The Mikado.
As a classically trained singer and musician (piano & violin), what are some of your favourite pieces, and what would you love to perform in the future?
In true soprano fashion, my dream roles include Violetta from La Traviata, Gilda from Rigoletto, The Queen of the Night from The Magic Flute, Olympia from Les Contes du Hoffman, Zerlina from Don Giovanni, Lucia from Lucia di Lammermoor, Adele from Die Fledermaus, and finally, Christine from The Phantom of the Opera.

Tell us about your character, Peep Bo, in The Mikado. How are you approaching the role?
Peep-Bo is one of the three little maids – sister of Yum-Yum and Pitti-Sing and is a ward of Ko-Ko. Peep-Bo is cheeky, outspoken, cynical, sarcastic, and has a little bit of an attitude. As with all of G&S characters – she is also a little ditsy and vain! I am really looking forward to bringing this character to life as I see a bit of my teenage self shining through in some of the dialogue – I definitely had my moments of attitude as a teen! I am looking forward to bringing some comedic relief into the opera through playing such a cheeky, fun and slightly snarky character which will contract nicely when some of the other scenes and themes in the opera are so serious. I am also very excited to bring this role to life alongside the incredible Katie (playing Pitti-Sing), and Nika (playing Yum-Yum), who are both really talented artists, and being able to really play into the cheeky sister dynamic alongside the both of them.

Who is your biggest role model and why?
Nadine Sierra – her career is my dream!
What do you like to do when you’re not rehearsing or performing?
When not rehearsing or performing, I am either studying or playing some sort of sport. I am in my final year of Law School, which as you can imagine is relatively time consuming, although I would be lying if I told you all that I watch my lectures! I am also training for an ultramarathon open water swim in which I will be swimming 25kms in the ocean in March, so you can guarantee I smell like chlorine 90% of the time! If I’m not at the pool, the beach or the library, you can find me on the cricket field! I am a left-arm pace bowler and have played both first grade premier cricket for quite a few years, as well as fun social cricket.
Finish this sentence… my favourite snack is…
Charcuterie board! I am a sucker for a good cheese platter. If I could pick more than one – it would be freshly shucked oysters or the biggest selection of seafood I could get my hands on!
